My instructor's syllabus states that I will have proctored exams. What is a proctored exam? What should I do? A. Proctored exams are exams for online classes that are administered in a secure, observed setting. The usual reasons instructors require proctored exams is to ensure the student enrolled in the class actually takes the exam and to ensure the student does not use books, notes, web sites, search engines, or other assistance while taking the exam. The student is responsible for scheduling a proctored exam. Sites for approved proctors are here: http://www.kctcs.edu/distancelearning/testingcenters.htm. When scheduling a proctored exam, please have your course name and instructor name available, and know what date and time you can take the exam. Once you have scheduled the proctored exam, you will need to email your instructor with the contact information of the proctor. Your instructor will email the proctor the proper password, which will open the test for you. On the day of the exam, be prepared to show your picture ID and to be able to log onto a computer with your KCTCS email user name and password. Please schedule your proctored exam at least two weeks in advance and call promptly if you will be unable to keep your appointment or if you have withdrawn from the course. Q. If I enroll in an online course, can I buy my books for the course at the ECTC Bookstore? A. If the course is offered by ECTC, the ECTC Bookstore will have your book. Q. What do I do if I have a technical problem while in my BlackBoard class? A. First, call the KCTCS Help Desk toll free at 1-866-590-9238 to report the problem. The Help Desk has trained technicians who can assist with most problems. You should also message or email the instructor to alert them to the problem, especially if you had a problem while taking an exam or quiz. Q. Are online classes easier than on campus classes? A. No. Generally, online classes require the same work and require you to meet the same course competencies as on campus classes. In addition, online classes require the student to be more organized, self-disciplined, and self-paced than an on campus class. Some students report the lack of a physical presence with the instructor and other students makes it more difficult to stay on task and to understand the course work fully. The convenience of an online class may be offset by the lack of class interaction for some students. This self assessment may help you decide if an online class is right for you: Are Distance Learning Courses Right for Me? (courtesy of the Center for Independent Learning). Q. I'm registered for an online course and I've logged into BlackBoard. Now what do I do? A. This orientation from the KCTCS Distance Learning Office may help you figure out how to navigate your course: Online Student Orientation. If you still have questions, ask your instructor, either by message or email or in the discussion forum. Oftentimes, if you ask a question in the discussion forum, experienced online students will be glad to assist you.
