ONLINE CLASSES Online courses are the most technologically demanding of the Distance Learning options at ECTC. Courses can vary in approach, but generally Online courses demand that students follow a set schedule of assignments and that students "attend" or log into the class frequently. The course content is obtained in various ways. Textbooks are usually required; often student workbooks and supplementary materials are required. The students deliver their assignments and the instructors send their feedback and evaluation either within the course in BlackBoard or via email. In some courses, students use links to websites to obtain information. Students usually will be required to submit assignments quite frequently - in most cases, at least weekly - after reading their textbook and other materials. For a KCTCS provided tutorial for online classes, go here - http://www.kctcs.edu/distancelearning/orientation.htm. Successful students in online classes will be those who can work well without supervision and without the physical presence of a student support network. Though many students and instructors report a high degree of interaction via email and discussion boards, some students report a feeling of isolation. Instructor help is usually available via email, phone, fax, discussion board, or by visiting the campus. Some instructors may also utilize instant messaging to facilitate communications. Most instructors check their email once or twice a day, so immediate feedback is not likely. The student bears the responsibility for successfully completing an online course. An online course is not a "bunny" course, but often requires as much, if not more, work as a traditional on-campus class. After completing the registration process, go to the BlackBoard course site at www.elearning.kctcs.edu. Log in with your KCTCS email user name and password. Your course will likely show as "unavailable" until the date the course is scheduled to start. If the course still shows as "unavailable" the first week of class, contact the course instructor via email to determine what you should do. If you receive no response, feel free to email the ECTC Distance Learning Office. See the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQS) for information on minimum computer and software requirements for students enrolling in an online class.
