Carpentry focuses on building techniques to provide proper skills in methods of construction adhering to current residential and commercial code standards.
The training begins with classroom instruction in tool recognition, material identification, blueprint reading, site selection and preparation and building material management techniques. Students learn safety as standard work practice. Hands-on laboratory experiences include the proper use of hand tools and power equipment associated with structural integrity in a wide variety of wood construction activities. Some projects which students will complete include framing, roof construction, flooring, window and door installation, cabinet making, exterior and interior trim finish work.
Opportunities for employment in this field will be in self-employment as an independent contractor or working with construction companies in residential and commercial building development.
