The first issue of the Heartland Review was published in the spring of 2002. Since that time, the journal has seen a substantial increase in submissions, in part owing to the establishment of the Joy Bale Boone Poetry Prize and the Fiction contest. Contributors to past issues of the journal include Kathleen Driskell, Mary E.
