Using the Library

Borrowing Privileges

You do need a library card in order to check out materials. Bring your library card when you come to campus. If you do not have a library card, you may obtain one at the circulation desk. You must bring a photo ID and your student identification number in order to sign up for a card.

If you are a registered student, you may take out 8 books at any given time. You may renew materials ONCE.

Please place books you wish to return in the book drop at the far end of the circulation counter. If you wish to drop materials off after hours, please place them in the book drop on the exterior of the Learning Resources Center building. This drop is located to the right of the front doors.

Only books housed on the shelf units with the designation STACKS are available for checkout. Books located in the Reference area, as well as videos, magazines, microfilm, newspapers, print indexes and vertical file materials do not leave the library

Reserves

Sometimes instructors will place materials on reserve for specific classes. If your instructor indicates that he or she has placed something on reserve for a class, please come to the circulation desk and give the name of your instructor and the course number. You will be asked for your library card.* Materials must remain in the library, but you can make photocopies at one of the two photocopiers near the circulation desk. Copies cost 10 cents per page. The machines take dimes, nickels and quarters, as well as one-dollar bills. If you need to change a five or a ten dollar bill, please come to the circulation desk.

*It is a good idea to bring your library card to campus when you come for your classes.

Interlibrary Loan

You may find, on occasion, that you need an item that is not part of the collection in the Media Center. If you find a reference to a title that is not in the Media Center collection, but is located at one of the other community colleges, you may fill out an interlibrary loan request form (available at the circulation desk.) Please follow the instructions carefully. You do need a library card in order to make use of this service.

Please note that items listed as being on reserve, shelved in reference, special collections materials, or videos do not circulate and are not available for interlibrary loan. Journals may not be loaned, but journal articles may be copied and sent via ILL. No more than four requests from one patron may be processed on a given day at a time. Please note that some items may not be renewed, depending on the policy of the school from which the item is loaned. Renewal policy varies from school to school.

Generally, interlibrary loan materials take between 5 and 10 days to arrive. The library does not send arrival notices, so it is your responsibility to call the library (769-2371, x240) or stop by the library and check on the item's loan and arrival status. Once you obtain the materials, you are responsible for them until you return them.

In order to take advantage of this service, you need to start your research projects as early as possible. The end of the semester is a particularly busy time for interlibrary loans, both at Elizabethtown Community and Technical College and at the other colleges in the KCTCS system. This has the effect of increasing the time between requests and arrivals.

Internet workstations

The library provides 21 workstations for Internet-based research.  Do not access porn or conduct private business from these computers. Class assignments and library research takes precedence over all other uses. Microsoft Office products are available on a limited number of workstations. Only registered students and employees may use Office software. Anyone under the age of 16 wishing to use the workstations must be accompanied and supervised by a parent or guardian.

All library workstations require a user ID and password. If you are a registered student you will use your email user ID and password to log on as a user. If you have not set up your email account, we will log you onto the KCTCS email screen.

If you are a community patron, you must present a photo id and apply for a library card prior to your first use. You must present a photo id each time you wish to use one of our workstations. Students have priority use of workstations.

The workstations are networked to a printer at the circulation desk. Students may print items at no cost. Please come to the circulation desk to pick up your printouts.

Study areas

The general study area refers to the tables and study carrels in the center of the library. Students may talk quietly at these tables.

The quiet study area refers to the tables and study carrels in the back of the library, behind the book shelving area. Please refrain from talking at these tables and carrels. This includes cell phone conversations.

No eating, drinking or smoking in the library. No cell phones in the quiet study area. Children must be supervised at all times.
