FirstSearch |
FirstSearch consists of a number of databases covering a wide variety of topics. These databases are NOT full-text; they provide only indexes and, in some cases, abstracts. The coverage within these databases, however, is much greater than that of the full-text databases. In addition, a greater number of scholarly journals are indexed. The articles themselves may be acquired via Interlibrary Loan. |
Registered students can access these databases off-campus. Ask at the circulation desk for userids and passwords. If you wish to use one of the main campus workstations, you will need to know your student email user ID and password.
Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature (print index)
The title refers to a set of printed indexes to magazine articles. The green volumes are located on the index table, near the circulation desk. They cover the years 1963 to the present.
The indexes are organized by topic or subject. The topics are arranged alphabetically. In many cases, the main topics will be broken down into subheadings or more specialized topics.
The articles indexed under each topic will be listed alphabetically by article title. Each listing or citation will contain all the information you need to locate the article. Be sure and write all the information down! The information will include the title of the article, the name of the author, the title of the magazine, the volume number, date of publication, and page numbers.
The Media Center does not carry all the magazines indexed in the Reader's Guide. Use the blue notebooks near the Reader's Guide volumes or click on the List of Current Periodicals link below to determine if the Media Center does carry a particular magazine. If you see a citation for an article that would be perfect for your paper, but was published in a magazine not available in the Media Center, you can still request the article be sent through Interlibrary Loan. Keep in mind that the article will take a few days to arrive! Get started on your research early!
