What is NewsBank?
NewsBank is a full-text news resource. The Elizabethtown Community and Technical College Media Center subscribes to three NewsBank databases: NewsBank NewsFile Collection, The New York Times and the Courier-Journal. NewsBank NewsFile Collection contains articles from over 500 U.S. and Canadian newspapers and newswires. The Courier-Journal database contains articles from the Louisville Courier-Journal, including regional and local news, excluding advertisements. The New York Times database contains national, international, regional and local news articles, editorials and opinions, the New York Times Magazine and the New York Times Book Review; it excludes advertisements and classified ads.
How do I get into NewsBank?
Log on to one of the library or campus lab computers. You will need your KCTCS email user ID and password in order to do this.
Pull up Internet Explorer or Netscape.
Use the NewsBank button on the Library Home page OR click on the following URL:
If you are searching away from the main ECTC campus, you should see the following screen

Type in your userid and password (available at the circulation desk in the Library) and click on OK

NOTE: This is the first screen you will see if you are searching from a PC anywhere on the main campus.
Click on the title of the database you wish to search. You may also click on the Start Search button next to each database title.

How do I search NewsBank?
Click in the blank entry box.
Type in a word or phrase and click on Search.
How do I retrieve articles?
When you type in a search and click on Search, the screen will display a list of article titles, along with the name of the newspaper and the date of publication. Click on one of the titles, and the article of that title will display on the screen.
What do I need to know about searching the database?
Best Matches First versus Most Recent Matches First
If you want the articles displayed so that the most recent ones display first, click on the circle next to Most Recent Matches First before searching. The screen should appear as follows...

If you wish to use a phrase or multipart name as a search, NewsBank suggests that you put the phrase or name in quotes.

Types of sources
The database will search both newspapers and newswires. If you wish to retrieve newspaper articles only, click on the check mark next to the word Newswires. The check mark should disappear and the box in which it was displayed will be blank. The image above shows the Newswire box unchecked.
Can I email the article to my email account?
Yes. Click on the EMAIL button near the top of the article. Type in your address and click on the SEND button.
How do I get back to the list of articles?
Click on the LIST button
What if I want to perform another search?
If you are viewing an article, click on the LIST button. Click on the EDIT SEARCH button above the list of titles.
What if I want to choose a different database?
Click on the HOME button
What do I do when I am finished?
Click on your browser's BACK button until you get back to the library's web site.
