Reference

Use Reference materials to do the following:

The Reference shelving area is located near the index tables. When you are facing the general shelving area, you will see that the shelves are broken up into two main sections. The Reference materials are located on the first few rows of shelves on the left.

NOTE: Reference materials do NOT leave the library. You may make photocopies at one of the two photocopiers.

Print Reference Materials

Dictionaries

The Media Center holds a number of dictionaries, including the Oxford English Dictionary, a multi-volume set which will provide extremely detailed information about virtually any English word. Many single-volume dictionaries are also available in this section.

Dictionaries are located in the PE letter range of the Reference shelves. Foreign language dictionaries are located in the PA to PE letter range.

General Encyclopedias

The Media Center carries the Encyclopaedia Britannica and the Encyclopedia Americana. Both sets of volumes are located at the left end of the first Reference section shelf.

Specialized Encyclopedias

The Media Center carries a number of subject-based encyclopedias, such as the Encyclopedia of Philosophy and the Encyclopedia of Psychology. Use the book catalog to search for subject encyclopedias. If you are researching a topic that falls within the broad area of Education, use the keywords education and encyclopedia in your search.

Online Reference Resources

Facts.com

This is an excellent subscription reference resource that contains facts, graphics and articles on most current issues. In addition, it contains geographical information, biographies, obituaries and the text of many historic documents.

If you are a registered student, you may ask for passwords that will enable you to access this database off-campus.

CQ Researcher

This is another excellent resource to use as a starting point in your  research. It contains information on current issues in politics, medicine, social issues and more. Background information, opposing arguments and bibliographies are provided for each topic.

Kentucky Virtual Library -Virtual Reference Desk

The Virtual Library provides access to a number of online encyclopedias , including the Encyclopedia Britannica, Acronym Finder and more. It also contains links to carefully chosen web sites and web catalogs. These are organized according to subject.
