Audience

Who is the author writing the article for?

Scholarly journals contain articles geared towards scholars, specialists and graduate majors in specific fields. They may be harder to read because they contain technical language and professional jargon.

Authority

Who wrote the article and what are his or her credentials?

Articles are written by scholars and specialists who may have spent years studying the topic and conducting research for the article. The articles usually have been subjected to a process of review - the author asks other specialists in the field to read the article, ask probing questions and return it with comments, criticisms, etc. The editorial board of the journal is made up of specialists in the field; they review and select or reject articles for publication.

Scope

How much information on a topic: how much detail?

Detailed, in-depth coverage of specific topics.

Currency

How recent is the information in the article?

Information on recent events or issues would NOT be found in journals. The process of publication for journal articles, which includes reviews by field experts, can take 6 months or more; the articles themselves may be reports on research that has taken years.

Slant

Point of view - is the author trying to present a particular side of an issue?

Writers of journal articles are supposed to present objective conclusions, based on the results of unbiased research, studies, surveys and analyses.
