Audience

Who is the author writing for?

Magazine articles are written for a general, non-specialist audience. They do not use professional jargon and are usually easy to understand.

Authority

Who wrote the article and what his or her credentials?

The articles usually are written by professional writers; less often by subject experts. If subject specialists do write the articles, they will still write for the general audience, avoiding professional jargon and in-depth analyses.

Currency

How recent is the information in the article?

Since the articles do not have to go through the lengthy process of review, and do not have to reflect the results of research conducted by the author, the information should be very current. Information on very recent events and issues will be found in general news magazines such as Time and Newsweek

Slant

Point of view - is the author trying to present a particular side of an issue?

Magazine articles usually reflect the personal opinions of the writers rather than the results of objective studies.

Other

Magazines usually contain advertisements and color photographs and generally do not contain bibliographies or footnotes.

NOTE: Check with your instructor to see if he or she permits articles from general interest magazines.
