Print Indexes

New York Times Index (print index)

This title refers to the set of red volumes located on the index table. The volumes contain indexing  information for articles published in the New York Times. Coverage goes back to 1979.

Instructions for using the index are located at the beginning of each volume. Article entries are organized under subject headings such as AIDS, BASEBALL and AIRLINES. Geographic regions, people and corporations are also included. These entries will provide cross references

The entries or citations for the articles do NOT provide article titles or headlines. Instead, they provide a short summary of the article, along with the month, day, section letter, page number and column number. In addition, they indicate with the letters S, M, L whether the article is short, medium or long.

If you see an entry for an article that might prove useful, be sure and write down the date of publication and the page number, along with the year of publication (located on the spine of the index.)

The Media Center carries the New York Times on microfilm. Issues go back to1979. You will need to locate the correct microfilm (arranged by year, month and range of days.) If you need assistance in loading the microfilm onto the microfilm reader/printer, please ask the circulation staff for assistance.

Newspapers in the Media Center

The Media Center subscribes to the following newspapers:

Current issues are kept for a week at the newspaper table in the general study area. Back issues of the News-Enterprise, the Courier-Journal and the Herald-Leader are kept behind the reference shelves for two months.

The Media Center carries the following newspapers on microfilm:

Be aware that each New York Times reel arrives in the Media Center approximately a month and a half after the last issue on the reel is published. The News-Enterprise reels also arrive about two months after publication.

In addition, bear in mind that only the New York Times is indexed. If you wish to locate an article in the News-Enterprise or its antecedents, you will need to bring an exact date with you OR a lot of time and patience! If you are researching a local or state event, you may wish to look at some of the reference materials in the Kentucky Room. If you are researching a national event or issue, and want to obtain information on local reactions or activities, you may locate the important dates in an encyclopedia or other reference resource, or use the New York Times Index or the Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature.

Be aware that many New York Times articles are indexed in the EBSCO and InfoTrac databases. If you find an article from the New York Times in these databases, you will notice that they are NOT full-text. You will need to locate the microfilm reel and use the microfilm reader/printers to view and print the article. Be sure to write down the complete citation: the headline, author, date of publication, section letter and page number!
