Note: this screen will appear immediately if you are using the InfoTrac databases anywhere on campus
InfoTrac consists of three databases: Academic OneFile, Expanded Academic ASAP and the Health Reference Center. Choose Academic ASAP or the Academic OneFile if you are researching political issues, current events, social issues, cultural subjects and other topics. Choose the Health Reference Center if you are researching medical topics. Psychology topics may be searched in both databases.
Click on the phrase Start Searching underneath the database you wish to search. The following screen should appear:

You can choose to do a subject search or a keyword search. The database defaults to Keyword. If you wish to do a subject search, see the directions below
Click in the entry box and type in a word or words pertaining to your topic. You may use AND, OR and NOT to connect the terms. Click on the Search button or hit the ENTER key.
If you type gun AND control into the blank entry box and click on SEARCH...
...the following screen should appear.

If you do a subject search, the search engine will look for records that include your subject as an index term.
HINT: It is a good idea to try both subject and keyword searching. When you find an article that you like, try scrolling down to the bottom of the article. Look at the index terms (subject headings) and try using those terms in a subject search.
If you perform the following search (gun control)...

the following screen should appear...

Click on the blue, underlined word Narrow in order to bring up a list of subheadings.

The subheadings are organized alphabetically. If you are writing an argumentative paper, you may wish to scroll down until you see the following subheadings: Moral and ethical aspects; social aspects; political aspects; public opinion.
Click on the subheading of your choice and you will see a list of titles appear. In the example above, clicking on the subheading public opinion will bring up the following screen.:

A list of citations will appear. Each citation will give the following: article title, name of author, title of journal or magazine, date of publication, volume number, issue number and page number.
An indication as to whether the complete article is available online appears below each citation. In the example above, all three articles shown are full-text. This is indicated by the word text. You may also see the words abstract and citation. If these display, the full article is NOT available online.
Click on the blue, underlined word text in order to bring up the article.
You have the option of printing, saving or emailing your article to your email address. Scroll to the bottom of the screen until you see the following:

If you wish to print, click on the underlined word Reformat under the phrase Browser Print. Go to the File menu and click on Print.
NOTE: be sure to click on Reformat before you print - otherwise you will print more pages than you actually need.
You can limit your search to articles that are available online by clicking on the Full Text box under the blank search box.
Click on the Back icon to go back to the list of titles. You may also click on Back to Citations in the menu on the left side of the screen.
You may request the article through Interlibrary Loan
